Collagen is a protein fiber and is one of the most abundant proteins in the body. It’s a major building block of many body parts such as: skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, bones, and teeth.

Collagen is a polypeptide and contains a mixture of amino acids, which are found in all connective tissues within the body. It is the most abundant protein in mammals, composing approximately 25% – 35% of whole-body protein content. Amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins. You need them to produce proteins including Collagen. The specific amino acids required for Collagen production is as follows: Hydroxyproline, Proline, Alanine, Glycine are the primary constiutents of Collagen, although Arginine, Threonine, Glutamine, Hydroxylysine, Histidine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Tyrosine, Valine are also constituents.

The structure of Collagen is a triple-stranded helical molecule. Each collagen molecule is approximately 300 nanometers long. There are at least 16 different types of Collagen, but 80-90% of the Collagen in our bodies consists of type 1, 2, and 3.

– Type 1: consists of densely packed protein fibers. It helps to provide structure to skin, tendons, cartilage, connective tissue, bones and teeth.

– Type 2: consists of more loosely packed protein fibers. It helps to provide structure in elastic cartilage and joints.

– Type 3: Helps to support the structure of muscles, organs and arteries.

I personally consume Collagen in the form of a powder extracted from ethically treated, grass-fed, pasture-raised Bovine hide. It contains Alanine, Arginine, Aspartic Acid, Glutamic Acid, Glycine, Histidine, Hydroxylysine, Hydroxyproline, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Proline, Serine, Threonine, Tyrosine, Valine in balanced amounts.
